In the 1950s, the United States underwent a rapid economic boom, the dawn of the Cold War, and the Civil Rights movement. As a result of its booming economy, more people had access to new cars, suburban houses, and other consumer goods.

Historically, African Americans have struggled against racism and segregation for centuries; however, during the 1950s, it became part of the mainstream of American life. Blacks were largely excluded from the prosperity of the 1950s, while the white working-class saw their wages and status rise. African Americans faced some profound inequalities due to segregation in housing and education. An increasing number of Americans spoke out against injustice and inequality.
