Portraits of African-American Students and Teachers at Howard University in 1946

These photographs of African-American students and teachers of Howard University in Washington D.C. were taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt in 1946. Two years before Eisenstaedt captured the photographs, the university administration had asked its student to cease a campaign of protests and sit-ins against Washington diners and stores that refused to serve them.

Today, while Howard is open to all students, more than 90% of Howard students are African-American.
