Rare Historical Photos of Afghan Cameleers in Queensland from the late-19th Century

Muslim cameleers from Afghanistan and British India contributed heavily to the Europeans’ exploration and settlement of inland Australia. Their network of transport routes opened up the arid interior during the late 19th Century, and they were often seen working through the interior of Queensland. Women in Queensland’s outback looked forward to visiting the Afghan hawkers and cameleers. They brought news, household items, and haberdashery.
