Vintage Photos of Pre-Gentrified Stoke Newington, London in the late 1970s

Stoke Newington is an area located in the northwest part of the London Borough of Hackney. It was formed in 1965 by the merger of three former Metropolitan Boroughs, Hackney, and the smaller authorities of Stoke Newington and Shoreditch.

These fascinating throwback photos by Alan Denney show Stoke Newington in the late 1970s. During the late 1970s, the area almost looked like it had been abandoned. There were rows and rows of decaying, poorly-maintained Victorian houses, many of them empty. Today there are Foxtons, Planet Organic, Whole Foods, and Jojo Maman Bébé on the Stoke Newington High Street or Church Street. Still, in the 1970s, there were just numerous empty shops, many of them faced with graffitied corrugated iron.
