Newham is a borough in London’s East End, created in 1965. It was formed from the former Essex county boroughs of West Ham and East Ham. There are many historic villages in Newham, such as Silvertown, North Woolwich, Custom House, Canning Town, Beckton, Plaistow, West Ham, East Ham, Upton Park, Stratford, Manor Park, and Forest Gate.
The name Newnham reflects its creation and combines the compass points of the old borough names. The borough is undergoing a rapid transformation with some of the largest regeneration schemes in the country.
Photographer Peter Marshal toured the streets of Newham in 1991 and captured these stunning photographs. He also toured and photographed Camden, Deptford Hull, Shoreditch, and The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea during the 1980s and 1990s.
