Candid Photos of Celebrities Enjoying at the Queen After-Show Party at Kensington Roof Gardens, 1986

On the nights of July 11 and 12, 1986, Queen wrapped up two landmark London performances and took the celebration somewhere truly special. The band hosted after-show parties at the Kensington Roof Gardens — a lush, private rooftop garden perched atop the old Derry & Toms building in the heart of London. It was the kind of venue that matched the occasion: exclusive, theatrical, and utterly unlike anywhere else in the city.

The guest list read like a who’s who of fashion and entertainment. Fashion titans Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, and Calvin Klein were among the names that turned up, as were designers David and Elizabeth Emanuel — the duo behind Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress. British model and pop star Samantha Fox was also there, and she made no secret of how the night felt. “I sang with Freddie Mercury at a party once, and that was fantastic,” Fox later recalled.

Freddie Mercury was in his element throughout the night — charming, energetic, and at the center of nearly every memorable moment. He and Samantha Fox were photographed together multiple times across the evening, their easy rapport captured again and again by photographers working the room.

Photographers and music industry insiders mingled alongside the stars. Snappers Dave Hogan and Richard Young — both well-known faces on the London celebrity circuit — were present and documented the evening from behind the lens as much as they appeared in front of it.

The party drew from across British entertainment. New wave band Spandau Ballet attended, as did glam rock icon Gary Glitter and fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, known for her flamboyant, brightly colored style that fit right in with the Queen aesthetic. The crowd was as eclectic as Queen’s own music.

Actress Anita Dobson — then best known for her role in EastEnders and in a relationship with Queen guitarist Brian May — was a prominent presence at the party. She was photographed with several guests throughout the night, including actress and model Rula Lenska and actor Dennis Waterman.

Freddie Mercury himself seemed to enjoy every moment. Whether surrounded by friends or holding court in the middle of a crowd, he was unmistakably the gravitational center of the room.

Among the other guests captured on camera were Phil Symes and Carol Hayes, who were photographed together during the celebrations.

Rock royalty also showed up in the form of John Entwistle, the bass guitarist for The Who. His attendance underlined just how far the party’s reach extended — this wasn’t just a Queen crowd, it was a gathering of British rock and pop’s biggest names from multiple generations.

Comedian and actor Mel Smith joined Anita Dobson for photographs, adding another strand to the evening’s wide-ranging guest list.

Broadcaster Janet Street-Porter was also at the party, photographed alongside Tony James of the band Sigue Sigue Sputnik — one of the more provocative acts of the mid-1980s British music scene. Queen’s manager Jim Beach was naturally present too, overseeing the celebration that capped off two nights of historic performances.

Fish — the stage name of Derek William Dick, lead singer of Marillion — was also spotted at the party, photographed with Anita Dobson. His presence alongside actors, models, fashion designers, and fellow musicians summed up the remarkable range of people Queen drew into their orbit that July night.
