Ginger Rogers was an American actress, dancer, and singer, widely known for performing in films and RKO’s musical films. Her original name was Virginia Katherine McMath; she was given Ginger’s nickname, which was based on a cousin’s failed attempts to pronounce Virginia. She began her career as a performer in local shows in Texas. Rogers made her motion-picture debut in Young Man of Manhattan (1930), in which she immortalized the catchphrase “Cigarette me, big boy.” Her acting was well-received by critics and audiences, and she became one of the biggest box-office draws of the 1940s. Her performance in Kitty Foyle (1940) won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. During her long career, Rogers worked in 73 films. She was a major movie star during the Golden Age of Hollywood and is often considered an American icon. She died of a heart attack in 1995, at the age of 83
