Stunning Historical Photos of Mexico From the Early 1900s

At the beginning of the 20th century, Mexico was under the rule of Porfirio Díaz. He ruled ruthlessly by force and he largely ignored the poor and favored the upper class. This inequality led to the Mexican Revolution in 1910. The 10-year civil war resulted in more than 2 million casualties. The Panic of 1907 dropped the demand for Mexican copper, silver, gold, zinc, and other metals. In return Díaz regime, cut its import of horses and mules, mining machinery, and railroad supplies. This conflict resulted in an economic depression in Mexico in 1908–1909

Díaz was re-elected after a highly controversial election, but he was overthrown in 1911 and forced into exile in France after Army units rebelled. Madero elected as the president in 1911, but the conflict and violence continued for another decade. Madero was overthrown and assassinated later by a military coup in February 1913. Mexico remained neutral in World War I.

The country remained under chaos and violent riots throughout the 1910s and 1920s, several governments came and went. Things began to change in 1934 when former revolutionary general Lázaro Cárdenas was elected. He carried out an extensive series of agrarian reforms, nationalized the country’s oil industry, and increase the exports.
