Dolores Hart is a former Hollywood actress currently she is Roman Catholic Benedictine nun. Dolores played the role of a nun in ‘Francis of Assisi’ in 1961, and two years later she became one in real life. She gave up her beautiful life as a prominent actress to live a monastic life as a nun. A gentle kiss with Elvis Presley changed her mind and she stepped out of obscurity.
Hart wasn’t born in a Catholic family; she was named after her Aunt Dolores Marie. She moved to Los Angeles with her mother and started her acting career after completing college. Hart made her screen debut in 1957with Elvis Presley in ‘Loving You’, and her career picked up steam almost miraculously. By the early 1960s, she worked in several notable movies and established herself as a leading actress.
Hart became engaged with her boyfriend, Don Robinson. But they never got married and remained close friends. At the peak of her career in 1963, she ended her engagement and announced that she is quitting her acting career to become a nun.
“Even my best friend, who was a priest, Father Doody, said, ‘You’re crazy. This is absolutely insane to do this,'” Hart told the Washington Post.
She told her life story from her birth in Chicago to becoming Catholic in her autobiography ‘ The Ear of the Heart: An Actress’ Journey from Hollywood to Holy Vows’. Hart was the subject of 2012 HBO documentary ‘God Is The Bigger Elvis’, which was nominated for an Oscar.
