1950s Paris: Fascinating Photos Show Street Scenes And Everyday Life Of Post-War Paris

The 1950s in Paris and France is considered as an era of recovery and economic growth after the destruction of World War II. The government was busy in repairing the damages of the war. The economy has started its journey towards the ‘glorious thirty years’ with the help of US aid.

The city was dirty, and there were no laws and regulations about cleaning the buildings. The majority of the buildings and apartments were in poor condition. In 1954, thirty-five percent of Paris apartment buildings had been built before 1871. Despite all these conditions, the housing was expensive and short in supply. The government began a new large-scale project to build apartment blocks for the middle class and low-income Parisians. There were no supermarkets, instead a large number of small retailers were active selling almost every item.

The following photos show thriving Paris in the 1950s capturing street scenes, cityscapes and everyday in vibrant color.
