In November 1957, Jayne Mansfield bought a 40-room Mediterranean-style mansion at 10100 Sunset Boulevard in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles. The mansion formerly owned by Rudy Vallée. He bought this house in the 1930s but, for one reason or another, never lived in it. The three-story home has been described as both “Spanish Colonial” and, sarcastically, as “Mediterranean Movie-Star Baroque.” Jayne moved there with her husband, Mickey Hargitay.
Features of Mansfield’s Pink Palace
The home was 10,000 square feet featured with many rooms and seven bathrooms resting across its three and a half acres. Mansfield and Hargitay hired Los Angeles set decorator Glenn Holse for some modifications in their palace. Mansfield loved pink from her childhood, so the house was painted pink with cupids surrounded by pink fluorescent lights, pink furs in the bathrooms, a pink heart-shaped bathtub, and a fountain spurting pink champagne. Her initials were formed into the compound’s wrought iron gates, as well. A new 40-feet heart-shaped vast pool was also built. A heart motif also appeared in Mansfield’s fireplaces, one above an outdoor fireplace on a patio and one carved indoors, though there were also five others throughout the property. The enormous living room was carpeted with deep white shag. The room featured cupid statues on pedestals in wall niches, a fountain equipped to circulate champagne and a Steinway grand piano that, like the walls of the master bedroom, was painted with cupids.
What happened to Jayne Mansfield’s pink palace?
The Pink Palace was sold after Mansfield’s death to Ringo Starr of The Beatles and later to Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas. Singer Englebert Humperdinck bought the house in 1976 and sold it to developers. They demolished the house in November of that year.
