Rarely Seen Modeling Photos Of Young Whitney Houston In February 1982

Long before Whitney Houston became one of the best-selling music artists of all time, she was an 18-year-old in New York with a striking presence and a voice she was still introducing to the world. In February 1982, she walked into a Manhattan studio for a modeling photoshoot that almost no one knew existed for the next three decades.

The session was arranged for After Dark, an entertainment magazine that covered theater, music, and nightlife. Photographer Jack Mitchell, a well-known figure in New York’s arts photography scene, shot 13 rolls of film on his medium-format camera. The session ran for two full hours inside his studio. Despite the effort put into the shoot, the photographs were never published.

At the time these photos were taken, Whitney was not yet a recording artist. She was singing in her church choir and performing alongside her mother, gospel and soul singer Cissy Houston. Her professional music career was still a few years away, making this shoot a rare window into a very early chapter of her life.

After the shoot wrapped, the negatives went straight into Mitchell’s files. They stayed there, untouched and unseen, for roughly 30 years. No one came back to publish them, and the session faded from memory.

That changed in February 2012, when Whitney Houston was found dead in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. She was 48 years old. When Mitchell heard the news, he went back through his archives and pulled out the negatives from that 1982 session. He then made the decision to release the images to the public.

The photos show a young, composed Whitney Houston in front of Mitchell’s lens — poised and self-assured in a way that hints at the stage presence she would later become famous for. Thirteen rolls of film from a two-hour session produced a significant body of work, all of it sitting in a filing cabinet while the woman in the photos became a global icon.
