In July 1969, just weeks before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, library photographer John Rogers took to the streets of London with his camera. What he left behind is a precise, street-level record of a city that looks strikingly different from the London we know today. Rogers worked methodically, moving through residential streets and familiar corners, capturing ordinary life as it simply was.
Barandon Street appears in several of Rogers’ frames, showing the tight rows of terraced housing that defined this part of the city. The streets are calm. There are no traffic jams, no crowds pressing against the pavement.
Blechynden Street offers more of the same quiet atmosphere. The low traffic visible in these shots is not incidental — London’s roads in 1969 carried a fraction of the vehicle volume they do today. The architecture stands uncluttered, the brickwork and rooflines easy to read against open skies.
Hurstway Street brings a similar stillness. Rogers framed these residential stretches with the eye of an archivist — he wasn’t chasing drama, he was documenting fact. Each shot records the materials, the scale, and the everyday texture of London life in that summer month.
