A Photographic Journey Through the Lives and Spirit of the Glasgow People in 1968

In 1968, photographer Jürgen Schadeberg traveled to Glasgow, Scotland, to capture the everyday life of its people. He was drawn to the city’s Gorbals district, known for its old tenements and rich history. Jürgen had left South Africa a few years earlier to teach at London’s Central School of Art & Design. His work in Glasgow focused on the simple moments that often go unnoticed.

The Gorbals was a neighborhood filled with character. Jürgen’s photos show the old tenement buildings that lined the streets. These brick structures were home to many families. They had a unique charm, despite being worn down by time. The buildings were soon to be demolished in the Sixties to make room for new housing and concrete tower blocks. Jürgen wanted to document the life that thrived there before the changes began.

Jürgen’s photographs highlight the people of Glasgow. He captured children playing in the streets, laughter ringing out as they kicked a ball or rode their bikes. Families gathered outside their homes, chatting with neighbors and enjoying the fresh air. These candid moments reveal the strong sense of community in the Gorbals.

He also photographed workers going about their daily routines. Men in flat caps and women in simple dresses walked to work or ran errands. These images show the hard work and determination of the people in Glasgow. Jürgen captured the essence of their lives, making the ordinary feel special.

The streets of Glasgow were bustling with activity. Jürgen took pictures of markets filled with fresh produce and vibrant colors. Vendors called out to customers, creating a lively atmosphere. The energy of the city shines through in his photographs.
