Sophia Loren married Italian film producer Carlo Ponti in Mexico on 17 September 1957. The couple had their marriage annulled in 1962 to escape bigamy charges. Ponti then obtained a divorce from his first wife, Giuliana Fiastri, in France, allowing him to marry Loren on 9 April 1966. Carlo Ponti promised Sophia Loren that he would gift her the ‘most beautiful house in the world’ after they married. And he fulfilled his promise. The Grand Roman Villa is located in the Appian Way Park, and it is the most magnificent and prestigious area surrounded by a centuries-old park. The main villa was built in the 19th century on the ruins of a basalt quarry used, from 312 BC, to extract the material used to make the most famous Roman road, the Appian Way. The property is surrounded by a centuries-old park, covering 1.5 hectares and featuring tall trees and spacious lawns. In 1964, Alfred Eisenstaedt from Life paid a visit to the Grand Villa and photographed Sophia Loren in her luxurious villa.
