In 1972, four Swedish musicians came together to form a group that would dominate pop radio for the better part of a decade. Their name, ABBA, was built from the first letters of each member’s first name: Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. What started as a local act in Sweden quickly grew into one of the best-selling music groups in history.

ABBA’s big moment came on April 6, 1974, at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Brighton, England. They performed “Waterloo,” an upbeat song that mixed pop and rock with a driving, energetic beat. The song won the contest outright and launched the group onto the world stage almost overnight. Within weeks, “Waterloo” was charting across Europe and beyond.

To promote their winning single, the group staged a playful photo shoot in Copenhagen with an actor dressed as Napoleon Bonaparte — a nod to the song’s theme of surrendering to love, much like Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. They also posed at London’s Waterloo railway station, leaning into the song’s name in a way that grabbed attention from the press.

The group’s sound was a carefully crafted blend of pop, rock, and disco. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus wrote and produced nearly all of ABBA’s material, while Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad delivered the vocals. Their tight harmonies were a defining feature — the two women’s voices complemented each other in a way that was instantly recognizable. By 1976, ABBA was a household name across Europe, and their reach was growing fast. They toured extensively, performing in Scandinavia, the United Kingdom, and mainland Europe. Music videos, still a relatively new tool for promoting songs, became another weapon in their arsenal. ABBA invested in high-quality videos that aired on television programs across the world, helping them reach audiences they couldn’t visit in person.

At the time, both couples within the band were also romantic partners. Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog were married, while Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were engaged — they married in 1978. Their stage presence was a key part of their appeal — bold costumes, strong choreography, and an energy that translated well even in large arenas.

ABBA’s global reach extended well beyond Europe. In 1978, they stood in front of a seven-foot-tall poster of themselves on a street in Los Angeles, a sign of just how large their American profile had grown. They appeared on U.S. television, including the program Midnight Special, performing in their now-iconic matching stage costumes. Australia, Canada, and the United States all saw major commercial success from ABBA’s records during this period.

In January 1979, ABBA performed at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City as part of “The Music for UNICEF Concert: A Gift of Song.” It was one of the most high-profile benefit concerts of the era. Later that same year, they played sold-out shows at Wembley Arena in London in November. Their 1979 tour stretched across multiple continents and cemented their status as one of the world’s top live acts.

ABBA also made a move into film. “ABBA – The Movie,” a concert documentary filmed during their 1977 Australian tour, premiered in London. To mark the occasion, all four members attended the premiere and tried their hand at a roulette table at Crockford’s, a well-known London gaming club. Their songs “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and “The Winner Takes It All” kept the hits coming into the early 1980s, with lyrics that tackled themes of heartbreak and the complicated reality of romantic relationships.

In 1981, ABBA gave a rare concert at the Concord Pavilion in Walnut Creek, California. By that point, the band’s personal relationships had changed. Both couples had divorced — Björn and Agnetha in 1979, Benny and Anni-Frid in 1981. The tensions within the group were real, and the pressure of maintaining a band while navigating broken marriages took a toll. ABBA disbanded in 1982 after a decade that produced some of the most recognizable pop songs ever recorded.
