Ford Mustang I at the 1962 Pacific Grand Prix

Racing driver Dan Gurney introduced this sharp-looking little two-seater at the 1962 United States Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, New York. With a rear-mounted V-4 engine, it was unlike any Ford ever made. In 1964, the Mustang name was transferred to a sporty four-seater that created its own buzz.

The Mustang I is now on display at the Henry Ford Museum as part of the Driving America exhibit.

The vintage photos of the Mustang I were taken at Laguna Seca Raceway near Monterey, California, during the 1962 Pacific Grand Prix. Gurney demonstrated the car on track during the event as he had earlier that same month at Watkins Glen.
