Cypress Gardens, Florida’s first theme park, was opened in 1936 by Dick Pope, Sr., and his wife, Julie Downing Pope. It has been a popular family destination since 1932. There are picturesque and historic Cypress Gardens botanical gardens inside the Park, which have been an iconic Florida landmark since 1939. There are beautiful gardens with exotic plants worldwide, such as over 30 kinds of palm trees, ten kinds of banana trees, 15 types of azaleas, ten kinds of camellias, and more maintained in pristine condition. This unique and exciting attraction is a popular stop for visitors from all over the nation and has been featured in numerous national magazines and television shows.
Cypress Gardens was regularly visited by celebrities and Hollywood movie producers in the late ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s, including Elvis Presley, Esther Williams, and Johnny Carson. The gardens were featured in full-length features such as “On an Island with You,” “Easy to Love,” parts of “Moon Over Miami,” and “This Is Cinerama,” as well as hundreds of short features.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Cypress Gardens expanded to compete with new Central Florida theme parks opening up. Mr. Pope retired in the early 1980s, and his son, Dick Jr., took over the business. Following nearly a half-century of ownership and involvement by the Pope family, Cypress Gardens was sold to publishing conglomerate Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in June 1985. In September 2009, Merlin Entertainment purchased Cypress Gardens theme park, Splash Island water park, and the adjacent botanical gardens from a group of investors. The Park was re-opened in 2011 as Legoland Florida, retaining some of the original theme and gardens, but Cypress Gardens was known as the ‘Waterski Capital of the World’ from the 1940s through 2003.

A dog's life is a good one at Florida's Cypress Gardens where canine pets have private accomadations in the form of a "Mut-tel." Little Marlene Monts De Oca allows her Great Dane to look over the rooms and get acquainted with the other tenants before she embarks on a tour of the famed attraction.
