Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a beautiful port situated in Tenerife, Spain. The city is located on a small plain surrounded by two usually dry ravines. Its history stretches back just over four hundred years. Alonso Fernández de Lugo first disembarked here in 1494. However, it was not until a century later that the city began to thrive, with its port serving as a dynamo for growth, making it the second most populous in the Canary Islands.
There are several religious monuments in the oldest part of the city. Construction began on the church of San Francisco, one of the most beautiful examples of Island baroque, in the late 17th century. The church of El Pilar, built in the XVIII century, is built on the ruins of a former hermitage. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival is one of the most spectacular in Spain. The fiesta, which has been designated of international tourist interest, is known for its stunning costumes and performances by the murgas (satiric singing groups), rondallas (musical groups), and comparsas (dance groups).
