Stunning Polaroid Photos of Celebrities from the 1970s and 1980s by Maripol

Maripol is a former artist, film producer, fashion designer, and stylist. She was born in Rabat, Morocco, in 1957 and brought up in France. She moved to New York City with her then-boyfriend Edo Bertoglio at 19 in 1976. She became the art director of Fiorucci’s Italian fashion label within a year of starting her career.

In 1977, Maripol took her first Polaroid with an SX-70 camera. She photographed Andy Warhol, Steve Rubell, Bianca Jagger, Jerry Hall, and Grace Jones at Studio 54. Her photographs of the Mudd Club were exhibited at the Rizzoli and Earl McGrath galleries in Manhattan and published in V magazine.

Maripol has influenced the looks of artists such as Madonna and Grace Jones. As a 1980s New York downtown scene member, she photographed Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, and Debbie Harry with her Polaroid camera. Maripol also produced films, including ‘Downtown 81’.

These are Polaroids from Maripol’s collection of portraits of 1980s New York Downtown characters. They are from the late 1970s and 1980s.
