Santiago s the capital and largest city of Chile, and it has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city was founded as Santiago del Nuevo Extremo (“Santiago of the New Frontier”) in 1541. During the 1960s, the government launched various development plans for Greater Santiago. In 1966 the Santiago Metropolitan Park was established in the Cerro San Cristóbal. The new International Airport Pudahuel was opened in 1967, and the construction of Santiago Metro was started in 1969.
