During ‘Some Like It Hot’ filming in late September 1958, Marilyn Monroe found out she was pregnant. Arthur Miller informed Billy Wilder that Marilyn was pregnant and asked him to be careful with her and end her workday by 4.30 PM. Wilder did not take it well.
Phil Stern was assigned to capture the view from Sam Goldwyn’s window on the Goldwyn Studios lot for Look magazine. He captured Marilyn unposed using telephoto lenses from his bird’s eye view of Goldwyn’s office. He was able to capture a moment no other photographer had ever seen; Marilyn Monroe, visibly pregnant, unaware of Phil’s presence.
Although Marilyn wanted to protect her baby, she worked long hours and suffered from insomnia, so she was afraid of miscarrying. Unfortunately, she suffered another miscarriage on December 16. She was unable to carry her pregnancies to full term. Monroe tried to conceive again after two years, however, she failed again.
