Basel is the third-largest city in Switzerland by population. It is located in the Rhine valley and is surrounded by numerous mountain ranges: the Vosges Mountains in France, the Black Forest in Germany, and the Jura Mountains. As autumn approaches, the daily air temperature amplitude is especially large, with warm temperatures during noon and cold temperatures at night. In autumn and winter, fog typically lasts longer in the Rhine valley than in Basel. Basel’s early morning fog is frequently cleared by the “Möhlin-Jet,” a south-easterly wind system caused by the topography of the Rhine valley in the city’s eastern part.
