During the reign of General Chao Phraya Chakkri, founder of the ruling Chakkri dynasty, Bangkok became the capital of Siam (as Thailand was known before). The new capital moved the court from the west to the east bank of the Chao Phraya River. The city became a popular destination for U.S. military personnel, increasing tourism. After World War II, Bangkok has grown at an unprecedented pace, which has caused problems with transportation, communication, housing, water supply, drainage, and pollution.
They modernized the Siamese public, and American influences molded Bangkok into an enchanting, charming, soft, sophisticated, relatively orderly but accommodating city. Throughout Thailand, rapid changes occurred from the 1950s on. A free-wheeling social scene and free enterprise in commerce dominated the day. The pleasure-loving, gracious and hospitable Siamese made it easy for Americans to thrive here.
Here are some fascinating vintage photos that will take you back to Bangkok in the 1950s.
Hmm, so Bangkok was already experiencing floods 70 years ago? That’s quite intriguing.
Considering that it is situated on a floodplain of the Chao Phraya River, I assume that the region must have been prone to flooding for millions of years.
Guess the dude that chose the spot didn’t know much or listen to experts maybe?
I am curious to know if Ayutthaya experiences floods like Bangkok does? Additionally, I am also interested in knowing if the other side of the river, around the original site in Thonburi, is prone to flooding.
I am not entirely sure about the flood levels during the relocation of the capital in the 18th century. However, that is where the expertise of scientists and engineers comes into play.
Yeah that’s crazy. It is difficult to comprehend why the location was chosen for the city in the first place.
That is true. Many cities are built on floodplains, such as New Orleans, Guangzhou, Kolkata, Amsterdam, and many more. In such cases, the benefits of having natural harbors and fertile soil often outweigh the potential risks of flooding.
Flooding can actually enhance soil fertility, leading to a better yield of crops. Additionally, waterways are often the most convenient and cost-effective way to transport bulk crops. Although the risks of flooding need to be taken into account, building cities on the riverbank, right in the middle of floodplains, has been a popular choice throughout history, with the benefits outweighing the costs.
These are some fantastic photographs, any info on who the photographer was?
I just about checked out every one and tried to imagine myself there.
Some stunning pictures here 👍
Thank you for sharing these pictures. It is always delightful to witness vintage Thai media.
Could someone please guide me to online galleries where I could find more photographs of Bangkok from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s? I am considering websites of public libraries, among others. I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thank you.
