The 19th century in the Netherlands starts with the appointment of Louis Bonaparte as the first king of the Netherlands. In 1813, a provisional government was created to gain the power of the country from the French. The Netherlands also stopped slave trade practices by 1814, and it was completely abolished in 1863. The mid-19th century saw the rise of industry in the Netherlands and a drastic decline in working conditions for the working class. The railway exploded in just a few years throughout the country. When the industrial revolution began in the Netherlands in the mid-nineteenth century, child labor and excessively long workdays were a full force. In 1889 Netherlands government also passed several laws that would regulate the number of working hours for women and children.
