Brick Lane, Bethnal Green, and Whitechapel are connected by Cheshire Street in London’s East End. The market is open every Sunday. Jonathan Baker was at the market one Sunday in October 1973. He took photos of shoppers and stallholders.
Most of the Victorian architecture along the street has been destroyed as a result of World War 2 bombings in the 1940s and from slum clearance in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Synagogue on Cheshire Street, United Workmen’s and Wlodowa Synagogue, closed in 1987. The Carpenters Arms, the Repton Boxing Club, and the Wood Close School are some of the only original buildings left.
