The 1970s was the decade of rapid change; it was the time for rebels, sports, feminism, and protests. The era is known for being a time of culture and politics. The first Pride march of 1971 ended up in Trafalgar Square, the first Concorde flight to JFK airport left Heathrow in 1977, and people partied in the streets for the Notting Hill Carnival, Silver Jubilee, and Arsenal’s FA Cup win over Liverpool.

London’s population declined steadily after World War II, from an estimated peak of 8.6 million in 1939 to around 7.5 million in the 1970s. Things began to change in the late 1980s when the population started increasing, bolstered by strong economic performance and a positive public image.
