Stunning Photos of Burnside Highlanders Juvenile Jazz Band in Newcastle, 1971

Burnside Highlanders was a famous marching jazz band that first appeared in early 1960. The bands made a distinctive sight on the march with their colorful uniforms, unfurled banners, and twirling drumsticks. There was a big jazz band craze in the North East, Wales, and the Midlands. Initially popular during the Depression, they were out of favor during the war but returned in the 1960s and 1970s, especially in coal towns and council estates. Children would rehearse on playing fields during the week under the tutelage of parents who served as guardians, fundraisers, and coaches, then travel by bus to compete against each other at weekends at well-attended tournaments. Teenagers and children who joined bands felt pride and purpose and a healthy sense of rivalry and competition. Typically, anyone aged three to 18 could join the band.
