The Last Married Couple in America’ is a 1980 comedy film starring George Segal and Natalie Wood. The plot revolved around Jeff, and Mari Thompson has been married for fifteen years. They seem to be happy in their marriage and family life, despite their marriage not being perfect. All of their married friends, though, are divorcing or getting separated. Their newly single friends try to persuade Jeff and Mari – individually and together – that divorce is the best option. Inevitably, they will eventually divorce, even if they decide to remarry. Even divorce can reenergize love in a stable marriage. Mari and Jeff do evaluate their marriage in light of these assertions by their friends. Even though they are still married, their friends also put them in potentially compromising positions.
The chemistry between Wood and Segal in this movie was incredible. There are many heart-touching scenes between the main characters. Also, the supporting players are excellent, especially Dom DeLuise and Marilyn Sokol. Despite the best acting and directing, the film did not perform well at the box office.
