A photographic Tour of Camden High Street, London in 1990 by Peter Marshall

There is a short stretch of road called Camden High Street in Camden Town, in north-northwest London. The route connects central London with Hampstead. The high street hosts several major music venues at either end (the former Camden Palace and the bridge over the Regent’s Canal at the southern end). Traffic can only go north on this one-way street (southbound traffic travels on parallel Camden Street).

Peter Marshall took us on a tour of London’s Camden district in 1986. He returned to Camden High Street four years later for a mooch. There were posters of music by The Blow Monkeys and Nick Cave on the streets. We can see punks, hippies, psychobillies, rude boys and ravers rumbling on the street.

This Grade II listed cast iron bridge, probably dating from soon after the canal was opened in 1820, was restored in the late 20th century, its wrought iron stays replaces by steel and decking renewed.
