The 1970s in Wales started with the shutdown of the Cardiff trolleybus system. The system that once served Cardiff was closed on 11 January 1970. In 1976 the Welsh Development Agency was formed to encourage industry to move to Wales. The Welsh tourist industry also witnessed rapid growth. The population of Wales rose slowly in the 20th century, and at the end of the 1970s, the total of Wales was 2.81 million.
