Native Americans inhabited Colorado for more than 13,000 years. The borders of Colorado were finally fixed in 1850 after France and Mexico sold the land to the USA. Colorado became the first western state to host a major political convention when the Democratic Party met in Denver in 1908. Colorado was the first state in the union to grant universal suffrage through a popular vote. Women won the right to vote in Colorado in 1893.
