Ottomans also ruled Algeria for three centuries, from 1516 to 1830. In 1830 French invaded Algiers, which is now the capital of Algeria. From 1848 until independence, France administered the whole Mediterranean region of Algeria as an integral part and département of the nation. These spectacular colorized pictures show ports, ships, streets, famous landmarks, and everyday life of Algeria in the late 19th century. These photos were colorized using the photochrom process.
